  1. sitting
  2. standing
  3. moving
  4. in a game

Related Activities  (in order of progression)

  1. Seated Practice with a Partner – The student will sit directly in front of the screen with a partner (teacher). The student will throw the ball at the screen and the partner (teacher) will catch it. Then, the partner (teacher) will throw the ball and the student will catch it.

  1. Individual Seated Practice – The student will sit directly in front of the screen.   The student will throw the ball and catch it after it rebounds off the screen. Students who possess less strength or ability should sit close to the target. When a student becomes acquainted with the activity, he/she should move back after each successful throw and catch.

  1. Standing Practice with a Partner – The partners will stand in front of the screen. One person will throw the ball and the other will catch. Then, they will switch roles.

  1. Around the Clock (for groups of three) – Two students will stand in front of the screen. The third student will stand directly behind the partners in case the ball goes passed the partners after the ball rebounds. The student standing on the right will throw the ball and the student on the left will catch it. The student that catches the ball will hand the ball to the person standing behind him/her (retriever) and take that position. The person who was the retriever becomes the thrower. The thrower becomes the catcher.

  1. Cardiovascular Catch – The student will run the length of the gymnasium with a ball. When he/she is in a reasonable distance from the screen (2-3 feet), the ball should be thrown and immediately caught by the student. Then, the student will return to the line.

  1. Cardiovascular Catch with a Partner – Screens should be set up at opposite ends of the gymnasium. The group will begin at one screen and run to the other. One student will carry the ball until he/she gets to the opposite screen. Then, the ball will be thrown at the screen and the partner will catch it. The catcher will hold the ball and they will travel the other screen. Then, the ball should be thrown and caught again. Therefore, each person will have an opportunity to catch and throw. Progression – Have the students pass the ball continuously while moving.

  1. The Longest Yard – One student will be the thrower, the other will be the catcher. The thrower will attempt to make the ball rebound as far as possible and the other person (catcher) will attempt to catch it. After a successful catch partners will switch roles.

  1. Angels in the Outfield – The class (angels) will stand in the outfield (a half circle around the screen). One student will travel the length of the gymnasium and “slam” the ball. The class (angels) will attempt to catch the ball after it rebounds off the screen. Each person will have an opportunity to be the “slammer”.

  1. Slam It – The students will stand in a single file line. One person will travel the distance of the gymnasium and throw the ball as hard as possible at the screen. The next person in line will attempt to catch or pick up the ball and also “slam” the ball. After the “slam”, the thrower must return to the line.

  1. Small modified game – Teams will be evenly divided. The ball must be thrown in to start the game. Players may not interfere with the person who has possession of the ball. However, they may intercept a thrown ball. Also, if a ball hits the ground it is awarded to the opposite team. Once a ball is caught, the player (catcher) must freeze. A point is awarded when the shooting team hits the screen and the ball touches the floor.
